2023 Ford F-750 Towing Capacity

The Ford F-750 is the biggest truck in the Ford Medium Duty lineup, and that makes it one of the toughest trucks available anywhere in the world today—but how much can a Ford F-750 tow? In order to calculate the Ford F-750 towing capacity for your model, you’ll need to subtract your vehicle’s total weight from your model’s Gross Combined Weight Rating, i.e., the maximum combined vehicle-trailer weight that your configuration is able to handle. We’ll show you everything that you need to know below! GCWR ratings top out at 50,000 pounds in this year’s F-750 lineup, but curb weight ratings are highly variable.
Calculating Your Ford F-750 Towing Capacity
Ford F-750 models are sold in Straight Frame and Tractor configurations, and both of these models are designed to be upfitted and customized for use in particular industries. With other models, one can calculate towing capacity by subtracting the vehicle’s curb weight from its Gross Combined Weight Rating. Here, however, the possible variation in Ford F-750 curb weights makes this standard technique less useful!
Calculating the Ford F-750 towing capacity is necessarily more complex, but it’s still a fairly straightforward process:
- Determine Your Base Curb Weight: After selecting a base configuration—F-750 Straight Frame or F-750 Tractor—you’ll need to choose your engine and your options. (The Straight Frame is available with Gas or Diesel, the Tractor is only offered with Diesel.) Each of these factors can impact your base curb weight, which tends to vary from around 10,000 to 15,000 pounds.
- Determine the Weight of Add-Ons & Upfits: Next, you’ll work with an authorized upfitter to make sure that your model is ready for the unique needs of your enterprise or industry. Ask for a total weight estimate when you’ve finished selecting options, and double-check your vehicle’s weight once you’re ready to go.
- Subtract your total vehicle weight from your model’s Gross Combined Weight Rating. We’ve provided a reference list of maximum F-750 GCWRs right here:
Ford F-750 Gross Combined Weight Ratings
Ford F-750 Straight Frame (Gas)
- Gross Combined Weight Rating of 37,000 pounds
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 30,200–33,000 pounds
Ford F-750 Straight Frame (Diesel)
- Gross Combined Weight Rating of 50,000 pounds
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 30,200–37,000 pounds
Ford F-750 Tractor (Diesel)
- Gross Combined Weight Rating of 50,000 pounds
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 30,200–37,000 pounds
Your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is mostly relevant for payload calculation, but we’ve listed it here for easy reference in case you need to do some heavy lifting without a trailer.
So, how much can a Ford F-750 tow? Upfits and options notwithstanding, it’s safe to say that diesel models can handle upwards of 30,000 pounds when properly equipped!
Which Ford F-750 Engine is Right for You?
As you can see from the information above, the F-750 diesel is probably the better fit for Chicago and Madison drivers who need to be able to maximize their towing capacity. Regardless, it’s worth it to compare both available engines so you can make an informed decision:
- 7.3L V8 Gas Engine: 335 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque
- 6.7L PowerStroke® V8 Turbo Diesel: 277 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque
Looking for a little more oomph? Available factory options can push the diesel engine’s power output up to 300 hp / 725 lb-ft of torque or 325 hp / 750 lb-ft of torque.
