Registering a Car Bought in Another State

If you’re wondering how to buy a truck in another state, registration is the first step you’ll need to take after driving home. But, this can be completed in one trip to the DMV! When you purchase your vehicle, ask your dealership for a bill of sale that clearly lists your purchase price. Then find your local DMV on a website like DMV Near Me.

Have the following items with you when you go to the DMV:

  • Bill of sale
  • Completed application for vehicle transaction form
  • Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner
  • Lienholders’ names and address
  • Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
  • Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
  • Registration Fees
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of residency

Be sure to let your clerk know that you purchased your car out of state and that you’d like to title and register at your current address. The clerk will take your paperwork and return the bill of sale, but keep your original title. You’ll then pay the difference in state taxes between the two states. Your new title will be mailed to your home address.

Taxes and Fees on Out-of-State Cars

The process of buying a car in another state is not that different from buying a car locally. The biggest difference is that your state and the dealer state will likely have different state taxes, which means you’ll need to take care of that at the DMV. Other than taxes, you’ll need to pay processing fees at your DMV. And though you might feel like the process is more expensive, it’s generally around the same price to register a new car in your home state as out of state – so feel free to shop around!
